Disney+ to Adapt Marvel’s What If Series

According to a report by SlashFilm, Marvel Studios will adapt Marvel Comics’ “What If…” series of comic books into animated series format. The series will debut on their upcoming Disney+ streaming platform. The adaptation will be overseen by MCU visionary Kevin Feig. And staying true to the comic books, the stories featured in the What If series is not canonical to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

For the uninitiated, the What If comic books are an anthology series that features stories told by The Watchers, a race of cosmic beings who watch over the Marvel Universe. They document important events that happen in the universe and events that could have happened  (in some cases, events that happened in another reality.) The Watchers only serve as observers and never interfere, despite their near-omnipotence.

The stories featured in the What If comic books are non-canon, and merely serve as a way for Marvel to explore their rich treasure trove of properties, without any risk of mucking up editorial mandates or existing continuities. This led to stories that are either humorous (What if Squirrrel Girl lifted Thor’s hammer) or downright dark (What if Frank Castle killed Aunt May.)
