Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel Debuts Tonight on Disney Channel

Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel debuts tonight at 8 PM ET on Disney Channel

Phineas And Ferb: Mission Marvel is a special 1-hour episode which airs tonight (Friday, August 16), at 8 PM ET on Disney Channel. This is the first crossover between the Phineas and Ferb characters and the Marvel Superheroes. If you want to know why Captain America is missing, and Spiderman is on the team, it all has to do with Phineas and Ferb creators Dan Povenmire and Swampy Marsh playing favorites. They like Spiderman. Captain America… not so much. I think we all agree Spidey has more opportunity for hilarious one-liners than Cap.

According to Dan Povenmire, the challenge for this crossover, or any crossover for that matter, is pleasing fans of both camps. He has talked about it in interviews leading up to tonight’s debut on Disney Channel. Doing something Marvel fans may think is cheesy or violates the characters would make fans upset. It had to work for both sides. We had a chance to see the episode on the Disney Channel iPad app, and we think it works perfectly.

Mission Marvel brings superheroes Spiderman (Drake Bell), Iron Man (Adrian Pasdar), Thor (Travis Willingham), and the Hulk (Fred Tatasciore) to the town of Danville, home of summer project inventors Phineas (Vincent Martella) and step-brother Ferb (Thomas Sangster). Doofenshmirtz Evil Inc.’s Dr. Doofenshmirtz (Povenmire) is thwarted by the boys’ pet Perry the Platypus once again (Curse you, Perry the Platypus!). Despite being smashed by Perry, Doof’s “Power Drain-inator” fires a misplaced shot, bouncing off Phineas and Ferb’s Homemade Space Station and taking away the powers of the Marvel superheroes in New York City. Marvel villains Red Skull (Liam O’Brien), Venom (Danny Trejo), Whiplash (Peter Stormare), and M.O.D.O.K. (Charlie Adler) decide to find Doofenshmirtz (the source of the heroes’ Power drain) and begin running amok in Danville.

Meanwhile, the superheroes track down Phineas and Ferb and after some misfires on getting their powers back, the boys and their friends (and Agent P, in a new superhero costume) rally to help the good guys. Co-creator Swampy Marsh says it was a challenge to use the Marvel characters, with each one having his own set of rules. Povenmire and Marsh had some funny discussions about all the little details that entail each character, like the one about lifting Thor’s mystical hammer, Mjölnir. Apparently, the key to wielding Mjölnir is if you are worthy, and all of Thor’s powers, like flying and creating lightning can only be accomplished while holding the hammer.

Disney isn’t stopping with the Marvel crossover. They are working on their next crossover project, Phineas And Ferb: Star Wars, with a tentative release of summer of 2014. ToonBarn was at San Diego Comic-Con on July 19 when Dan Povenmire made the stunning announcement that fired up the crowd at the Phineas and Ferb panel. They were talking about Mission Marvel being “one of the best they’ve done”, and it didn’t take long for them to try and top it. Here’s the video for that announcement:

Don’t forget to watch Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel, tonight at 8 PM ET on Disney Channel. This episode will also be availble on Disney XD, on August 25.

I am a Big Fan of all types of animation. Like a lot of things, the cream always rises to the top. My favorites have included Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Rebels, anything Pixar, Phineas and Ferb, Voltron Legendary Defender, and the DC/WB Animated Films. I have a lot of Old School favorites as well, such as Star Blazers, Voltron, Looney Toons, Tom & Jerry, and Scooby Doo.
