Disney’s newest princess-in-training will be making her way to your DVD racks this coming September 17th, 2013 via the release of Sofia the First: Ready to Be a Princess DVD, which collects 5 episodes from the hit 3D animated show and a complimentary Sofia dress-up doll kit.
Sofia the First, which premiered last January 11, 2013 on Disney Channel and Disney Junior, is notable for introducing a newest and possibly the youngest addition to the House of Mouse’s roster of princesses – the 7-year old Sofia, who found herself suddenly turned into a princess after her mother marries King Roland II of the Kingdom of Enchancia. The series features guest appearances from classic Disney princesses such as Cinderella and Jasmine, who offer words of wisdom and guidance in helping Sofia learn that being a true princess doesn’t come from outward appearance, but from the heart.
The 5 episodes on the Sofia the First: Ready to be a Princess DVD is perfect for both newcomers to the series and people who want to relive the episodes that cement the series’ structure – it contains the episode in which the young princesses learn valuable lessons at the Royal Prep Academy, one where Sofia helps a shy classmate make a new friend, and even one that has Aladdin’s Princess Jasmine dropping by in order to give Sofia and Amber a magic carpet ride.
On the whole, the episodes included in Ready to Be a Princess do a good job of setting up the series and its characters, which should be fine for viewers who weren’t able to watch the first season and would want a jumping off point before the 2nd season starts (it’s on the way, according to the creators.)
Sofia the First uses CG animation but takes advantage of cel-shading in order to give the visuals a hybrid 2D/3D look, which prevents the uncanny valley (a common problem with 3D CG animation) from surfacing. The art also balances Sofia the First’s unique style while still making iconic characters like the Fairy Godmothers and Princess Jasmine instantly recognizable and consistent.
The voice acting in the series is also top notch, featuring Modern Family’s Ariel Winter as the titular princess, and comedian Wayne Brady as Clover the Rabbit, alongside other notables like Sara Ramizer, Russi Taylor, Barbara Dirikson, Darcy Rose Byrnes, and Jess Harnell, and the DVD’s Dolby Digital 2.0 (available in French, English, and Spanish) do justice to the impressive scoring.
