Disney has just announced plans for a new CG-animated feature titled Planes, which is “inspired by” the world of Pixar’s Cars (it’s basically Cars, but with planes instead of automobiles). The feature is scheduled to debut in theaters on August 9, 2013 and will be produced by DisneyToon Studios.
Planes was originally intended to be a direct-to-home entertainment release, but it seems that they have since considered it viable for a big screen debut. Directed by Klay Hall, the film will be similar to John Lasseter’s Cars franchise in the sense that it will show a world in which airplanes have a secret life.
Actor Jon Cryer was originally cast as Dusty Crophopper, the lead of the movie, but The Hollywood Reporter confirms that he longer involved with the project. Industry veteran Carlos Alazraqui (The Fairly OddParents, Camp Lazlo) will also be lending his voice, to a character named El Chupacabra.
