Nintendo is known for being largely possessive of their first party franchises, and not being open to the idea of having them appear on other consoles and handhelds much less a competitor’s. But with the launch of the New Super Mario Bros. franchise on the mobile platform, as wonky as it is, proves that Nintendo is not completely against venturing out of their comfort zone. And a recent announcement lends credence to the rumor that the mobile New Super Mario Bros. is not a fluke, and that Nintendo is at least considering a pivot towards mobile. The announcement: that there are plans to bring the Mario Kart franchise to mobile devices.
Tentatively titled “Mario Kart Tour,” the game is currently in the works and has been scheduled to debut in “the fiscal year ending in March 2019.” There’s not much details other than those, but considering how strict Nintendo is when it comes to leaks and announcements, it’s a safe bet that this announcement makes Mario Kart Tour a confirmed release.
