Sony has recently confirmed that they are going ahead with the 3rd installment of the Smurfs movie franchise – hardly surprising news considering how much it took home at the box office. What’s surprising is that the studio has revealed that Smurfs 3 will be fully animated. None of that live action stuff.
The first two Smurfs films were both live-action/CG animation hybrid, with the first one grossing $143 million domestic and $563 million worldwide, while the sequel did a little bit less at $71million domestic and $347 million worldwide.
We suppose the choice to go full animation will at least help them save money on the casting of big name stars. That’s got to be worth a lot of money.
