There are currently two commonly used types of viral campaign strategy for movies on the net right now: the first one insults your intelligence, while the second one effectively piques your curiosity and extends the narrative of the film beyond the medium. We’re glad that Sony’s approach with Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the second one.
Amazing Spider-Man 2’s most recent piece of viral marketing is a faux news article on the Daily Bugle website that reads as follows:
“Despite the assault on Oscorp Tower two weeks ago and the revelation that disgruntled Oscorp employee, Dr. Curt Connors, was responsible for the attack, Oscorp’s stock has climbed four points.
“Oscorp spokesman Douglas Menken provided some details from the meeting, including that the construction on the prototype alternative energy power plant, complete with hydroelectric tower, is on schedule for completion within the next year.
“Other highlights included a preview of a flight harness for the military and significant advancements in robotics by the head of the engineering division, Spencer Smythe.”
It’s not a clear-cut spoiler, but some items mentioned in the piece can be an allusion to Vulture, who wears a flight harness, or Hydro-Man, who is capable of manipulating water. The mention of Spencer Smythe is also notable, as Smythe in the comics was the inventor of a type of robots specifically designed to take down Spider-Man, dubbed the “Spider Slayers.”
Not that we’re expecting these new villains to appear in the upcoming film, as it’s already got enough villain for a single full length film. But it’s still a good tease at what the next few films might have in store for Peter Parker.
