Powerpuff Girls Return With All New Series and Licensing Program

Fresh off the success of the re-imagine TV special, the iconic trio of super-powered young women, The Powerpuff Girls, will be making their return to TV screens via an all-new rebooted TV series produced by Cartoon Network Studios. Additionally, the relaunch of the franchise will be supported by a full licensing program that will roll out across all regions. The rebooted TV series is scheduled for a 2016 launch, according to Cartoon Network CCO Rob Sorcher.

Classic Cartoon Network Shows Participate in Crossover Comic Event

If you think Marvel and DC’s respective heroes have the monopoly on intra-company crossovers, you’d better think again, because some of Cartoon Network’s classic characters will be featured in a new IDW comic book series titled Super Secret Crisis War!

In case you’re not familiar with tights and spandex superheroics, Super Secret Crisis War pokes fun (at the very least, its title does) at several of DC and Marvel’s large-scale crossover events, the titles of which have used the words Secret, Crisis, and War at some point.

Super Secret Crisis War will consist of six issues, and will feature the characters from Samurai Jack, Ben 10, The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory and Ed, Edd & Eddy banding together in order to fighter their respective enemies Aku, Vilgax, Mandark and Mojo Jojo. The first issue is scheduled for release in June.

Controversial ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Comic Book Cover Pulled By Cartoon Network

A swirl of controversy surrounds a Powerpuff Girls comic book variant cover that was set to ship in February from IDW Publishing. Cartoon Network chose to pull the plug after a series of complaints came to light. The cover was meant for the sixth issue.

One unhappy observer, a comic book retailer named Dennis Barger Jr., posted his complaints on Facebook:

A few days ago, we’ve posted news about the Powerpuff Girls (http://www.toonbarn.com/powerpuff-girls/powerpuff-girls-return-cartoon-network-january/) making their grand return to the network that they helped put on the map, Cartoon Network, via the special titled ‘Dance Pantsed,’ which is scheduled to air on January 20, 2014 at 7:30 PM ET/PT. Now, Cartoon Network wants you to really pay attention as they have also posted a new promo video that will give fans a sneak peek at the upcoming special.

One of the iconic animated shows that helped put Cartoon Network on the map, The Powerpuff Girls, will be returning to the network on January 20, 2014 at 7:30 pm ET/PT via the new animated special titled ‘Dance Pantsed.’

Dance Pantsed will not only feature the return of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, but will also see them teaming up with Beatles legend Ringo Starr, who will be making a guest appearance as the world’s most flamboyant mathematician, Fibonacci Sequins. Starr will also perform an original music video and song for the special, titled “I wish I was a Powerpuff Girl.”

2013 will mark the return of the Powerpuff Girls to Cartoon Network. As part of the studio’s push to bring back popular franchises alongside new quality content, Cartoon Network will be releasing a new Powerpuff Girls Special, with brand new, redesigned, and re-imagined CG animation breathing new life into the storied franchise.

The Powerpuff Girls, created by Craig McCracken, originally ran on the Cartoon Network from 1998 to 2005, serving as one of the animated adventure comedy shows that helped propel the network into the top. The return of the Powerpuff Girls in 2013 will have them being called upon to rescue not just the city of Townsville, but the USA and the world.

This week, MAD unknowingly pokes fun at the whole World Wrestling Entertainment/World Wildflife Fund debacle while spoofing “We Bought a Zoo”, as it tells a heartfelt tale of a man who tries to buy a zoo, only to get bodyslammed repeatedly, starring Triple H, John Cena, and Matt Damon. MAD also has “Two Broke Powerpuff Girls” – in which two of the Powerpuff Girls trio find themselves broke and in need of work, and where else could they go, but the local diner. Of course, MAD will not be complete without Spy vs Spy, Alfred E. Neuman, and other sketches!

Cartoon Network Enterprises has recently decided to expand its licensing efforts in the Asia Pacific region, and the most significant part of the expansion is the inclusion of popular animated properties such as Adventure Time with Finn and Jake, as well as The Amazing World of Gumball and Regular Show. The shows will join an already impressive portfolio that includes the Ben 10 and Powerpuff Girls franchises.

Not that long ago, Cartoon Network teamed with Papaya Studio and Crave Entertainment to bring Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion to the Nintendo 3DS. The general premise was awesome: take a dozen or so iconic characters from the network’s lineup (Ben 10, Chowder, Dexter, Samurai Jack, etc.) and have them square off in a fighter like Super Smash Bros. Well, now, thanks to some great footage from New York Comic Con 2011, we see that development has really come on strong for the home edition, Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion XL, out soon for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii. A few weeks back, ToonBarn teased the story of Cartoon Network’s upcoming fighting game Punch Time Explosion, that followed in the footsteps of TMNT Fighters and Super Smash Bros. by pitting 18 CN’s characters against one another. (Coincidentally, just days ago, ToonBarn broke with the story about Nickelodeon’s Super Brawl 2 — these toons must all hate each other!!). Now, as we get closer to the June 7th release date of Cartoon networks up-and-coming fighting game, made exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS (which, again coincidentally, ToonBarn is GIVING AWAY FOR FREE), Crave Entertainment and Papaya Studios are releasing a bit more info on the game.
