New Star Wars Rebels Video: Meet Kanan, the Cowboy Jedi

It’s true that Order 66, or what has come to be known as the Great Jedi Purge, led to the destruction of the Jedi order and many followers of the light side were lost. However, Master Yoda and Obi Wan Kenobi weren’t the only survivors. A new video for Star Wars Rebels reveals yet another Jedi who survived the purge, and he turns out to be one of the main characters of the upcoming series.

Named Kanan, this Jedi is voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr. and is not the typical force-weilding Jedi that fans are used to seeing. He uses both a blaster and tries to keep his past a secret. “I like to call Kanan ‘the cowboy Jedi,’” says executive producer Dave Filoni.

In Star Wars Rebels, set between Episode III and IV, Kanan has been hiding underground for years, evading the Empire. If the Imperials become aware of his existence “he’s going to get killed,” says art director Kilian Plunkett. He still has his lightsaber, but no longer uses it for fear of revealing his true identity — and has ultimately forsaken the ways of the Jedi Order.
