Sony Co-Chair Hints at Future Spin-Off Films for Spider-Man

With comic book movie adaptations being the flavor of the month (or decade, considering how long it’s been going on), it’s no surprise that Sony already has two sequels to The Amazing Spider-Man in the pipeline. After all, they probably learned their lesson from Fox’s mistake of letting several of their licenses to Marvel properties lapse. However, what’s interesting is that Sony may be going further than mere sequels, as Sony Co-Chair Amy Pascal has recently revealed to investors that a series of spin-off projects may soon be on the horizon.

Dragonology Movie in the Works

Dragonology Movie in the Works

Universal has just tapped producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci for a film adaptation of the Dragonology book, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The Dragonology fantasy books were presented as long-lost tomes written by Dr. Ernest in the 19th Century, and the film may rely on that same creativity in order to tell the story of a team of dragonologists who embark on a quest to avert an evil plot that will use the world’s last remaining dragons to wipe out humanity.

This past weekend saw the triumvirate of The Amazing-Spiderman, Ted, and Brave dominate the box office, bringing huge blockbuster numbers that no doubt brought a smile to the studio execs and shareholders’ faces.

First, Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man reboot proved to be as successful as everyone expected, with the comic book movie landing on the top spot with a $140 million take (during its 6-day opening), which brings its total worldwide cume to $341.2 million.

New Amazing Spider-Man Video feat The Lizard

The recent teaser trailers and clips for Marc Webb’s reboot of the Spider-Man film franchise failed (probably intentionally, in order to add a certain amount of mystique to the character) to provide us with a decent look at the movie’s antagonist, The Lizard, and while this new video still doesn’t show what the monster looks like, it does provide a little bit of backstory behind Dr. Curt Connors, who was the man who eventually turned into the green-skinned Lizard.

The Amazing Spider-Man sequel set for theaters May 2, 2014

The Amazing Spider-Man sequel set for theaters May 2, 2014

Even though we’re still a full year away from the SpiderMan relaunch, which officially begins with The Amazing Spider-Man on July 3rd 2012, Sony is already hard at work on the film’s sequel! The rebooting franchise will have a second movie in theaters just about 20 months later, when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 spins a web on May 2nd, 2014. James Vanderbilt will craft the sequel, just as he has the first movie, and Andrew Garfield will swing along, as well. Other than that, not much more is known about the sequel at this time – which seems about right, because there’s not that much information on the first film yet!
